New Delhi is fast preparing for hosting the IX Asian Games commencing from 19 November, 1982. Construction activities are in full swing to provide the necessary facilities for holding various events during the ASIAD which promises to be amongst one of the most spectacular events in the history of Asian Sports. This issue, fourth in the series of special stamps on Asian Games, features the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium which would be the venue for sports like foodball and for various athletic events. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium would be a prominent center of attraction during the games. Besides colorful events of sports and athletics, this Stadium would be the venue of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Asian Games.
Aesthetically designed, this Stadium wold be one of the very modern and sophisticated stadium in the world with the capicity of 75,000 seated comfortably in two-tiers of stands. The Stadium will have 8-lane track laid with Olymparene-78, a most modern synthetic track cover for athletic events. All timing equipment would be electronically controlled, while photo finishing cameras would ensure the most modern judging standards in athletics.
The Stadium will have two giant scoreboards of matrix type capable of displaying results simultaneously in Hindi and English. It will be flood-lit for conducting events at night and for enabling colour TV transmission. The Mian Press Center for the ASIAD will be housed in this stadium where results from all the venues will be available through an elaborate computerised Central Information System. The Press Center will have all modern facilities to enable the World Press to function as well as at similar international meets. Radio and TV will also have ample facilities for transmission direct from the Stadium.
The facilities created in this Stadium would also be available for use in future by athletes, sportsmen or trainees at the times of games being conducted or when coaching camps are being held. It would be one of the major landmarks of New Delhi.
